Alphametics is the name the famous puzzle writer, J.A.H. Hunter, gave to the puzzles based on simple sums where the numbers have been replaced by letters. Each letter represents a specific number. So if A is 4, then all As will be 4, and no letter other than A will represent 4. In J.A.H. Hunter's alphametics, these alphanumeric problems also formed meaningful words. Just to make it a bit harder!

Try making one up and you'll see how hard this is to do. Then think about the probability that three names of the nine planets just happen to work. Wow!

So all you have to do is to work out what the numbers were in the following ADDITION sum.

Trying to do this one sent Epsi slightly around the twist. Spaced out, you might say. It takes ages - but you may just be up to the challenge.

Be systematic or it will take even longer!

Can you find numbers which work in this alphametic?

How did you make sure you didn't just keep trying the same things over and over?

How long did it take? Be honest now!

Can you submit an original alphametic yourself? Give it a go!

And how amazing is it that when they named the original eight planets in the solar system, three of them would work as an alphametic? The more you try to create your own alphametics, the more amazing this becomes!
