Ashley is in hospital. He's got serious spinal injuries. It was just another day at school. The kids in the back row were leaning their chairs against the back wall. They'd been told not to often enough, but then again, teachers are always making up stupid rules, aren't they? The chair overbalanced, sliding forward and crashing Ashley to the ground. He hit his head on a window sill behind him on the way down. He couldn't move. But exactly who is responsible? And what is justice in this case? Ashley is severely hurt. But who is responsible? And how should they be punished?
Read each perspective on the scenario, one at a time, in any order you choose. At the end of reading EACH version, write down your opinion on who is right and wrong.
Then look back over your five opinions and see what changed as you heard another side to the story.
You know your opinion is going to change as you read the different versions. But in the real world, you usually only hear one side, sometimes two. So play the game! What would you have thought had you only heard the one version? Then only two? Then three? Then four? Then all five?
Make sure you give your opinion after each reading, clearly stating the order in which you read them.
Do you see any similarities between this scenario and events which have really happened within your life - either to you or others you know?
If you have the chance, compare your impressions with those written by someone who read them in a different order.
